Carlton cop AFL fine for concussion breach

The AFL has sanctioned Carlton for failing to remove a concussed player from their game against Collingwood.

Carlton have received a slap on the wrist from the AFL for failing to remove concussed midfielder Cam Polson from their loss to Collingwood.

The AFL announced on Friday the Blues had received a $20,000 suspended sanction over the incident during last week's game at the MCG.

AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking said the Blues' medical officer had failed to recognise that Polson was concussed after suffering a head knock during the first quarter.

League rules say teams must permanently remove a player from the ground if they're found to be concussed.

The AFL took into account that Polson had been monitored upon returning to the game and reassessed at regular intervals.

Hocking noted Polson had failed to tell Carlton officials he was "feeling off" at the time of the incident.

The Blues also claimed the video of the incident that was available to them on the interchange bench was "significantly" less clear than footage later obtained by the AFL.

Polson has been named to face Port Adelaide on Saturday.

The suspended sanction will remain in place until the end of the 2020 season.
