Carr backs Shorten to stay Labor leader

Bill Shorten will continue as leader even in the event of an election loss, says senior Labor frontbencher Kim Carr.

Key Labor Left faction heavyweight Kim Carr says he expects Bill Shorten will stay on as leader after the election, whatever the result.

Senator Carr says he's a "very strong supporter" of Mr Shorten, who hails from the party's Right faction, and is confident Labor could win the July 2 election.

"I take the view that Bill Shorten has been an extraordinarily effective leader of the Labor party and I have got no reason to believe he won't continue in that role, whatever happens after the election," Senator Carr told the National Press Club on Monday.
