Castleford coach Daryl Powell hailed Liam Finn after the five-eighth bounced back from gifting Warrington a route back into the match to settle a Super 8s thriller at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
The Tigers were leading 16-6 on the back of two Justin Carney tries and one from Michael Shenton when Finn kicked straight into the hands of Richie Myler, who went 90 metres to give Warrington hope.
And it looked as if Finn's error would cost Castleford dearly when Chris Sandow converted Kevin Penny's try from out wide to level the scores with just three minutes left.
But Finn made amends by keeping his cool to slot over a drop goal with his weaker foot and give the home side a crucial 17-16 win in the race for fourth spot.
"I thought it was really great of him to be able to maintain his composure when he'd come up with a pretty poor play to put them back in the game," Powell said.
The victory moves Castleford up to fourth and gives them a six-point cushion over Warrington, who now have it all to do to catch the Tigers and Huddersfield.
Warrington dominated possession and territory for large parts of the match but only had two Myler tries and Penny's late score to show for their efforts.
"I don't think we deserved to win," Wolves coach Tony Smith said. "A draw would probably have been a fair reflection.
Sandow endured a miserable start to his Warrington career at Leeds last week but he showed glimpses of what he is capable of, particularly with his kicking game.
