Wealth management and insurance giant AMP has appointed Catherine Brenner as chairman.

The former investment banker has been a member of AMP's board since 2010 and will take over from Rabobank New Zealand chairman John Palmer, who had stepped into the role on an interim basis, when Simon McKeon abruptly retired in April.

"We have a highly skilled board but expect to make additional appointments to further strengthen our collective background, perspective and experience against the strategy," Ms Brenner said in a statement on Friday.
