Geelong coach Chris Scott says AFL umpires should no longer make game-day reports, believing the matter should be left to match review officer Michael Christian.

Cats utility Jordan Murdoch was booked for rough conduct on the stroke of halftime for making high contact with Sydney's Isaac Heeney in Saturday's 17-point victory by the Swans at GMHBA Stadium.

The report seems almost certain to be thrown out, with the contact mostly incidental and Heeney unharmed.

"I think it highlights the absurdity of match-day reports," said Scott.

"To put the pressure on umpires to feel like they have to intervene in split-second moments like that is really unfair on them.

"It serves no purpose at all."

Scott felt the incident involving Murdoch and Heeney did not even warrant a free kick to the Swans' player.

"So then to report (Murdoch) and affect him for the next half of the game, I think makes a bad decision even worse," said Scott.

"This has been on the agenda for a long time, the match-day reporting.

"This is not the 1960s where we didn't have 12 camera angles.

"It will be reviewed to the nth degree post-game and that's when it should be reviewed.

"So for an umpire to make one mistake into two mistakes speaks more to how difficult it is to umpire.

"To ask them to be thinking about that as well when they don't need to is an error in my view."

The AFL has changed the tribunal process in 2018, with Christian reviewing all matches.
