Cats, Selwood fine after speeding incident

Contrite Geelong skipper Joel Selwood says he and the club have moved on from the speeding incident that cost the Cats a lucrative sponsorship.

Geelong skipper Joel Selwood says his speeding indiscretion is in the rear view mirror and his eyes are firmly focused on the road to AFL premiership success.

The 28-year-old, who is an Australian Grand Prix ambassador, lost his licence for a month and was fined after he was clocked at 127km/h in a 100km/h zone in February.

The incident cost the Cats a lucrative sponsorship - thought to be in the vicinity of $250,000 annually - with the Transport Accident Commission.

On Thursday, a contrite Selwood spoke about his disappointment over the incident that saw the TAC tear up its sponsorship agreement after an 11-year relationship.

"I do regret speeding ... I shouldn't have been doing it," Selwood said.

"It doesn't matter what the circumstances were, it's a road rule and I should have been better.

"I behaved the way that I should have after the incident (but) I was disappointed in what I did.

"We had a strong relationship (with the TAC) there for a while but we had a few indiscretions over that time that led to this and mine was only one of those.

"There doesn't need to be too much (done) now from our end. I went to a meeting and I owned up at the time and that was probably the more important thing."

Selwood is confident the Cats are primed to return to the finals in 2017 after their preliminary final smashing at the hands of Sydney.

A major roadblock on the path to that goal appears to be Geelong's unhealthy dependence on Selwood and midfield partner Patrick Dangerfield.

The duo were outstanding, once again, in the side's final pre-season hitout but Selwood is keen to put the brakes on such talk.

"We understand (that view) but I have more respect for my midfielders than the rest of the world probably does," he said.

"I think that they can do the job and I have trust in them.

"They're going to do a good job this year and I look forward to them showing that."

Selwood said defender-turned-forward Harry Taylor would be given as much time as necessary to adjust to the new role and backed him to kick plenty of goals despite indifferent pre-season form.
