Next generation Geelong midfielder Jordan Murdoch has signed on until the end of the 2018 AFL season with the Cats.

In his fourth season under coach Chris Scott, Murdoch has upped his output and had a career-high 26 possessions against Carlton in round eight.

The South Australian said the opportunity to help replace Geelong's ageing premiership midfield was a key reason to stay at Simonds Stadium.

"It's going to be an exciting era," Murdoch said.

"It's our opportunity now once these big guys, these legends of the club go. It's our dynasty that we want to start incorporating.

"It's my only club; it's the club I got drafted to - it's all I know. I absolutely love it here and I'm rapt to be here for another three years."

Geelong's football boss Steve Hocking said there was still plenty of improvement left in the 23-year-old.

"He is someone who brings a different dynamic to our group and we rate his skills, speed and goal awareness very highly," he said.

"As a club, we are looking forward to seeing Jordan mature and improve even further within our system."
