Labor stalwart Joel Fitzgibbon says the caucus remains behind Opposition Leader Bill Shorten despite opinion polls turning against him.

"I've never seen such a united caucus so determined to get behind their leader ... we are all determined to stabilise the show," he told Sky News.

Not since Kim Beazley became the opposition leader after Labor's 1996 electoral defeat has there been such support for a leader, he said.
