Commonwealth Bank services have returned to normal after a problem with electronic transactions left customers stranded in the midst of the morning rush hour, unable to pay for purchases.

The technical problem, which lasted for about three hours on Friday morning, affected credit cards, EFTPOS, net banking and travellers cards.

CBA customers struggled to make payments in shops and cafes, and were quick to vent on social media.

"Again lol okay any recommendations for banks that actually let me spend my money?" Twitter user Tonile wrote on Friday.

"@CommBank Why is this happening on an almost weekly basis these days?" another Twitter user Jordan posted.

While another user simply tweeted a video link to Rihanna's song, B***h Better Have My Money.

CBA responded to tweets from customers with apologies and a spokesman confirmed that services were returning to normal.

The spokesman confirmed that some CBA customers had been experiencing intermittent issues throughout the week but it was "very dependent on the individual".
