A CCTV camera captured footage of a man in the early hours of December 24, approach an ATM in Darwin with what appears to be either toilet paper or a ripped sheet covering his face.

The man appears to light some type of explosive device and place it on the machine before it spectacularly blows up in his face, propelling him backwards through the air.

The man is then seen stumbling to his feet and running off in to the night, leaving behind just the thongs he was wearing and a mangled ATM.
The NAB ATM’s alarm was activated after the explosion started a fire in the machine.

Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said in a statement that the damage form the explosion was significant.

The fire was eventually extinguished but not before quite a bit of damaged occurred,” she said.

“It does not appear as if anything has been stolen or the premises unlawfully entered.”
