CEO defends BHP's tax rate

BHP Billiton chief executive Andrew Mackenzie has defended the amount of tax the company pays in Australia.

The head of BHP Billiton has defended the amount of tax the mining giant pays in Australia, saying it's by far the nation's biggest taxpayer.

The company has come under fire over allegations of tax avoidance in recent months but chief executive Andrew Mackenzie says the company pays $8 billion to $10 billion in tax each year, with an effective tax rate in Australia of 45 per cent.

"We're by far and away Australia's largest taxpayer," he told ABC Radio on Tuesday.
