CFMEU looks to join textile workers' union

The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union is looking to team up with the CFMEU, confirming merger talks are underway.

The CFMEU is considering a merger with the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union.

A merger would have to be put to members of the latter for a vote, but the heads of both were talking up the benefits on Monday.

"We have chosen to enter into discussions with (the CFMEU) because they are a union that campaigns for jobs as well as for workers' rights and conditions," TCFUA National Secretary Michele O'Neil said in a statement.

CFMEU National Secretary Michael O'Connor said the textile union was the right fit for the CFMEU.

"They are a progressive union that supports policies designed to build a better, fairer and more progressive country," he said.

The CFMEU is also discussing a possible merger with the Maritime Union of Australia.
