Chad Reed ends drought with supercross win

Australian rider Chad Reed has claimed his first win in nearly two years, taking out the third round of the American Supercross series in Anaheim.

Australia's Chad Reed has ended a 22-race drought with victory in the third round of the American Supercross series.

The 31-year-old edged out double champion James Stewart with two laps to go to take out the main event at Angel Stadium at the weekend, his 42nd career win but first in nearly two years.

He now sits alongside Stewart and great Jeremy McGrath with a record-equalling eight championship victories in Anaheim.

"I worked way too hard for that win," Reed said.

"I've had 41 others and they've came a hell of a lot easier than this one."

Reed last topped the podium at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium in January 2012, a month before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a horrific crash that ended his season prematurely.

He returned in 2013 but missed several weeks of competition after having surgery on his injured knee a second time in March.

Reed now sits equal third on the championship standings and, with 14 rounds remaining this season, still considers himself a title contender.

"When I'm riding like this I've always been one," he said.

"I honestly believe I can be. That's why I spend millions of dollars to go racing. I've got the best team, I'm proud of them. They worked their butts off this past season.'

The series moves to Oakland this weekend.
