Australian Greg Chalmers is in a three-way tie for second after the first round of the Barracuda Championship PGA Tour event.
In an event devoid of big names, most of whom are competing in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio, Scotland's Martin Laird leads at Montreux Golf and Country Club with 15 points in the modified Stableford scoring format.
Former champion Gary Woodland, who won at Reno in 2013, was tied for the lead when he missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th before hitting his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th, leading to a bogey that cost him a point.
That put him at 14 points along with Camilo Villegas and Chalmers, the format awarding five points for an eagle, two points for a birdie and deducts one point for a bogey and two points for a double bogey or worse.
Chalmers had six birdies, one eagle and three bogeys.
"Made a couple of bogeys, bounced back real quick and got going the right direction," Chalmers said.
"This format is about making a lot of birdies and eagles."
Fellow Aussie Rod Pampling was in a tie for 12th on 10 points, with Geoff Ogilvy and Rhein Gibson two points further back.
