The main burst around 3.30pm near the UCLA campus and spewed water almost ten metres into the air, stopping traffic and trapping cars in an underground carpark, while parts of the college were flooded.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a water main burst left a hole about 3 metres wide in the middle of the street, leaving fire fighters to assist those stranded by the estimated 3 to 4 million litres of water that was released.

A burst water main sent millions of litres of water exploding over a wide area, leaving people trapped and took four hours to stop.
The Los Angeles Times reported that inflatable boats were sent to the area by the Fire Department to assist people.
The burst was finally shut down about four hours later, City of Los Angeles officials said.
