Power is slowly being restored at one of Sydney's domestic airport terminals after it was thrown into chaos because of an outage.

The T2 terminal at Sydney Airport was brought to a standstill on Friday just after 8.30am, with the power outage causing delays for passengers at check-in and screening.

Sydney Airport issued a statement just after midday stating that while the power was back on, it may take an hour to complete.
Airlines that operate from the T2 terminal include JetStar, Virgin and Tiger airlines.

Delays were so bad Virgin Australia advised its customers to avoid travelling to the airport.

Planes were reportedly being redirected away from the airport, with incoming flights delayed.

Security screening, baggage handling and check-in facilities were interrupted by the power failure.

It is believed the outage happened at about 8.50am AEST.

Passengers reported scenes of initial confusion as the lights went out and the security systems were disabled in the outage. Others compared the milling crowds to a moshpit.

The South Sydney NRL team is caught up in the drama, with the Rabbitohs due to fly to Townsville for Saturday night's match against North Queensland.

"Great day to be stuck at #sydairport #torture," South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis tweeted.

The outage comes as NSW school holidays are due to start on Friday afternoon.

Virgin Australia is advising customers to avoiding travelling to Sydney Airport.

Passengers with other airlines are being advised to check their airline's websites for updates.

Passengers took to social media to document the ordeal and to express their annoyance.

But not everyone was complaining. One user Daniel Smith @YPPH_A320 wrote: "To the airport and airline staff @SydneyAirport you are doing a great job! Crap time for all but you are all trying you guts out #thanks"
