Charge upgrade for NSW one-punch attack

Police expect to upgrade charges against a man previously charged with grievous bodily harm over the assault of a man who has died in hospital.

The framers of Australia's Constitution, working in the 1890s, debated the adoption of a Bill of Rights along the lines of that in the United States.

Serious charges, possibly murder or manslaughter, will be laid against a man whose alleged single-punch attack caused injuries that led to the death of another man.

The 22-year-old was charged in January with grievous bodily harm over the alleged assault of a middle-aged man on the NSW Central Coast in December, police said on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old man died from his injuries on Monday.

It's alleged that while driving through Mannering Park, the younger man stopped his car, got out and punched the older man in the head.

The victim's head hit the ground and witnesses called emergency services.

The man was taken to Wyong Hospital in a critical condition and later transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital where he died on Monday.

Police say they expect the grievous bodily harm charge to have been upgraded by the time the man's alleged assailant is escorted from custody to face Newcastle Local Court on March 12.

In January, the NSW government introduced mandatory minimum eight-year sentences for those convicted of drug or alcohol-fuelled fatal single-punch assaults.
