A man has been charged with slashing the throat of a homeless man in the Sydney CBD.

Police say the 37-year-old was sleeping on a footpath with another homeless man early on March 10 when the attacker crouched over him and cut his throat with an unknown object before running away.

The homeless man underwent surgery and has since been released from hospital.

A 39-year-old, who police say knows the homeless man, was arrested and charged on Thursday, and is due to appear at Central Local Court on Friday.
