Ric Charlesworth plans to quit as coach of the Australian men's hockey team after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in August.

Charlesworth made the announcement in Perth on Wednesday, adding he wants to bow out by winning the World Cup and Commonwealth Games titles before dedicating more time to his family.

Hockey Australia tried to coax the 62-year-old into remaining in charge of the Kookaburras until the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, but Charlesworth wanted to get out now while his passion was high.

"I think coaches can stay for too long in jobs and teams need to be continually refreshed, and if you are in the job you need to have the life and energy to do that," Charlesworth said.

"I've had the great privilege of being coach of the national team with the men for the last nearly six years, and for the women before that. It was something that I fell into accidentally but I found it incredibly rewarding."

"The Kookaburras are in good shape and can be further refreshed by a new head coach as they head toward the Rio Olympics."

A four-time Olympian and winner of the 1986 World Cup as a player, Charlesworth has had a successful coaching career.

He started with Australia's women's team - leading the Hockeyroos to two Olympic and two World Cup titles between 1993-2000 - and then with the Kookaburras since 2008.

Under Charlesworth, the Kookaburras won the World Cup, Champions Trophy, Commonwealth Games and claimed Olympic bronze.
