Cheruiyot wins 10,000m

Renaud Lavillenie's pole vault curse has struck again, as the Frenchman missed out on gold at the world athletics championships in Beijing.

Vivian Cheruiyot kicked with 200 metres to go to claim a second 10,000 metres world title on Monday, while Renaud Lavillenie's pole vault curse continued by missing gold yet again.

Cheruiyot passed Gelete Burka at the end of the last back straight and kept the advantage over her Ethiopian rival until the finish line, winning in 31 minutes 54.32 seconds.

Cheruiyot, who also has two 5000m titles, got her second 10,000m gold following 2011, after returning to competition from giving birth to her first child last year.

Burka took silver in 31:41.77. Emily Infield stole the bronze from American teammate Molly Huddle right on the line, clocking 31:43.49.

Lavillenie lacks only the world title in his illustrious vaulting career with the 2012 Olympic title and world record of 6.16m.

He had only one successful jump over 5.80m and had to share bronze with Poland's Pawel Wojciechowski and Piotr Lisek.

Shawnacy Barber claimed the first ever pole vault global event gold for Canada with 5.90m, winning on countback ahead of Olympic champion Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany who also had 5.90m.

Colombian star Caterine Ibarguen stretched her triple jump win record to 29 straight competitions since silver at the 2012 Olympics, taking a second straight gold with a PB 14.90 metres.

The day's other finals were the men's 3,000m steeplechase and women's 100m dash.
