Versatile Chiefs back Charlie Ngatai has signed with the Super Rugby defending champions for a further two seasons.

Ngatai, 23, recently shifted his provincial allegiance from Wellington to Taranaki but says he wants to stay put at the Chiefs, who have helped him to improve his game.

The former New Zealand schools and age group representative has played 19 games for the Chiefs in a variety of positions after two seasons with the Hurricanes.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says Ngatai has become an integral part of their backline.

"He's smart and has an excellent skill set, which enables him to play multiple positions. We are rapt he's signed on long term."
