The Chiefs are settling for Super Rugby pre-season fixtures in Toowoomba and Rotorua after a proposed showdown against French giants Toulon was scrapped.
The two-time Super Rugby champions had been in negotiation with the European Champions to play a high-profile inter-hemisphere game in France in February.
However, the Chiefs said in a statement that neither side was able to earn approval from their respective national bodies.
Player availability and travel considerations were also going to be difficult issues to address, Chiefs chief executive Andrew Flexman said.
"The Toulon match was always contingent on us being able to take a full strength squad," Flexman said.
"However, due to our circumstances, this has changed so now we will put our focus on our existing pre-season campaign and an important season ahead.
"We have not ruled out playing matches offshore in the future."
The Chiefs will play the Reds in Toowoomba on February 8 and the Blues in Rotorua on February 14.
