Police are searching the grounds of an old Victorian orphanage after claims children are buried there.

The site of the former Ballarat orphanage, which closed in 1968, was being scoured on Tuesday.

Police say they are investigating activities that happened before the facility closed.

Officers are working with the Coroner's Court, the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and the government.

The site is on Victoria St in Ballarat.
