Children have been thrown from the windows of a kindergarten in China after fire broke out with more than 100 people inside.

The fire started about 11am (local time) at the base of a complex in Ningde, south-eastern China, on Wednesday.

As the fire spread throughout the building, a kindergarten on the first floor reportedly began to fill with smoke, forcing rescue workers to throw children to safety.

Crowds of people gathered to watch the rescue effort and video footage showed children being thrown to safety.

Local media reported that the children were caught by onlookers below.

No one was killed in the blaze and the cause has not yet been identified.
