Children's doctor killed in cycling crash

A father of four, who was a doctor at The Children's Hospital, was killed in a cycling accident on a busy road in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

A cyclist killed in a collision with a truck in Sydney's eastern suburbs was a much-loved doctor at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Dr Henri Sueke, 36, was a paediatric ophthalmology fellow and had recently moved to Sydney with his Australian wife and four young children.

He was cycling along New South Head Road in Rose Bay on Thursday morning when he was involved in a collision and became trapped under the vehicle's wheels; he died at the scene.

Dr Sueke had only been at the hospital since March, but in that time had become a much-loved member of staff, a spokeswoman for The Children's Hospital said.

"He was respected and admired by his colleagues for his kindness and dedication to his patients. He was an excellent doctor," she said in a statement on Friday.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends, and in particular to his wife and four children."

The Sueke family had moved to Sydney from the UK earlier this year.

Dr Sueke was an avid triathlete and dedicated fundraiser for children's medical issues, including spinal muscular atrophy and for the charity Vision4Children, Fairfax Media reports.

He was reportedly riding to Edgecliff Station to go to work at The Children's Hospital, when he was killed.

The cyclist and the tip truck were both believed to have been travelling towards the city when the crash occurred near the intersection of Kent Road.

Witnesses reportedly tried to perform CPR, but the doctor couldn't be saved.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the crash scene and emergency services were clearing a space for it to land near New South Head Road, but Dr Sueke died before it arrived.

The truck driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests, police said.
