Chilly start to Victorian day, sun shines

Victorians had a chilly start to the morning with temperatures with some parts of the state dipping below zero degrees with the alpine areas blasted with cold.

After a chilly start across Victoria, the sun has come out to warm up the state.

Melburnians shivered through a brisk 4.2C morning just before 6am on Monday before rising to a warm 16C in the afternoon.

The state's alpine region dipped well below zero with Mount Hotham dropping to roughly minus five degrees Celsius after midnight, and -4.6C in Falls Creek about 6am.

A severe frost warning causing crop damage had been issued for several parts of the state but has since been cancelled, the weather bureau states.

The sun will return to Melbourne later this week with temperatures expected in the mid- to late-teens.
