Illegal child trafficking is growing in China with babies being abducted and sold online for thousands of dollars, a BBC investigation has discovered.

Police say an estimated 20,000 children are kidnapped each year, causing immense agony for parents.

Many of those abducted are lost forever.

The children are often illegally sold for adoption or forced to work as beggars for criminal gangs.

In a country that traditionally preferences males, it is reported that a baby boy can sell for up to $US16,000, double the price of a girl.

The demand is fuelled by the country's childless couples.
