Chinese battle Australians in women's golf

Rachel Hetherington is excited by the potential of the inaugural Australia Classic women's golf tournament which has brought 25 Chinese players to Sydney.

Rachel Hetherington sees huge potential in the inaugural $150,000 Australia Classic tournament which has local and Chinese women golfers battling it out from Friday.

Eight-time LPGA Tour winner Hetherington has prolonged her successful return to the ALPG Tour to play the new three-day tournament at Sydney's Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

Othe leading Australians playing include European Tour winners Stacey Keating, Rebecca Artis and Nikki Garrett.

The event is the first co-sanctioned tournament between the ALPG and China LPGA (CLPGA) tours, with 25 players from each tour and four sponsor invitees making up the field.

"It was a very pleasant surprise when I heard that the new event was on our schedule," said 42-year-old Hetherington.

"I thought my season was over, but I am really looking forward to playing against the top players from the CLPGA.

The growth of golf in China has been phenomenal since I retired from the LPGA back in 2010.

"I think it is great if we can have more co-sanctioned events with the CLPGA, both here and in China.

"It gives ALPG players and CLPGA players more playing opportunities and is an also an opportunity for us to see the exciting players emerging from China."
