Smart watches, glasses and other internet-accessible wearable technology have been banned among China’s armed forces, NBC News has reported.
The Chinese military’s official newspaper, the People’s Liberation Army Daily, reported on its website that its three million-strong armed forces personnel who wear wearable smart technology could pose security risks.
NBC News says it has confirmed the ban by talking to members of China’s defence forces.
The ban was prompted after a new recruit was caught wearing a smart watch, which his partner gave to him as a present.
The camera and wireless connectivity features in wearable technology could undermine security, NBC reported, quoting the Chinese website.
"The moment a soldier puts on a device that can record high-definition audio and video, take photos, and process and transmit data, it's very possible for him or her to be tracked or to reveal military secrets," the report quoted China's top agency in charge of protecting state secrets as saying.
