A large-scale manhunt involving dogs and helicopters is under way for an escapee who slipped out of a maximum-security NSW jail by using bedsheets and a pillow.

Stephen Jamieson, 28, a convicted armed robber, managed to cut through the metal fence in his segregated cell before using bedsheets to climb out of a jail yard and a pillow to get over a razor wire fence.

Jamieson was being segregated for his alleged attempt to dig an escape tunnel, with the beginnings of a possible route discovered on August 6.

A review of security at Goulburn jail has been announced following the incident.

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner, Peter Severin, said the escape shouldn't have happened.

"NSW prisons are very secure, and last year saw the smallest number of escapes in at least 30 years. Those escapes were all from minimum security," he said.

Jamieson was last seen in prison greens and police are asking anyone who spots him not to approach him and to call Triple Zero.

He is described as being Caucasian, 177cm tall, with a thin build, fair complexion and brown eyes.
