Chromecast headed to 'many more countries'

Google is eyeing an international expansion for its Chromecast dongle, bolstering rumours the gadget could soon be heading for Australia.

Paddy Wood, AAP Technology Reporter

SYDNEY, March 10 AAP - A top Google executive says the company's Chromecast dongle is coming to "many more countries" in the next few weeks, but it is not clear whether Australia is among them.

Sundar Pichai, the search giant's head of Android, apps and Chrome, made the comment during a keynote speech at the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas.

The gizmo, which plugs into a TV HDMI port and streams video and media content from mobile devices, is currently only available in the US, where it costs $US35 ($A38.84).

Pichai did not reveal how many Chromecasts Google has sold, but said the number was "in the millions".

The gadget has proven popular among so-called cable-cutters who are switching off traditional subscription pay-TV packages in favour of internet-based services such as Netflix.

Unconfirmed reports have claimed Google will bring the Chromecast to Australia in collaboration with Telstra.
