Former British child star Charlotte Church has accused pop giant Beyonce of hampering the progress of feminism by releasing a "sexist" and "stupid" song.

Church, who sold millions of albums in her heyday, walked away from the limelight and now releases small-selling experimental records on her own label.

The singer is adamant she is glad to no longer be part of the music industry treadmill and has now turned her guns on one of its biggest stars, accusing Beyonce of giving the wrong message to her fans.

She tells British newspaper The Times, "Look at Beyonce. Beyonce is one of the most important women in the world and one of the most influential women in the world, and her message is so f***d up.

"While it's pop music, it's fun, it's frivolous, don't live your life by it! ... But that song, If I Were a Boy, is really sexist to men. It's stupid and it takes the whole cause back," Church told the publication.
