The Anglican Church in Melbourne says the federal government could be fanning racism by the way it talks about asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

It says the government's use of the word "illegal" to describe asylum seekers helps to cause negative attitudes in the wider community towards what is a vulnerable group of people.

The church says it's been trying to send out a different message of welcome through a banner it's put on St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne.

Melbourne Anglican Bishop Philip Huggins spoke with Andi Yu.
