Citizenship case to take 'reasonable' time

A High Court decision on the eligibility of seven members of parliament could be delivered faster than usual because of its public importance.

Attorney-General George Brandis says High Court judges would be well aware of the public importance of making a decision on MP citizenship cases within a reasonable timeframe.

The High Court is due to complete three days of hearings into the eligibility of seven members of parliament on Thursday, but there is no indication yet when a judgment might be released.

"Ordinarily it's a matter of weeks or a couple of months, but of course their honours would be well aware of the public importance of knowing the outcome of these proceedings as soon as they may reasonably be known," Senator Brandis told Sky News on Wednesday.

He said there were "complex issues" in the case, but declined to comment on how the case was going so far.
