Citizenship check plan still not settled

Labor, the coalition and Greens remain at odds over how to solve the MP citizenship mess.

CLASH OF THE CITIZENSHIP PLANS

MALCOLM TURNBULL (COALITION)

* 21-day time frame, from time of resolution passing parliament, for MPs to lodge information to be published on MP interests register.

* Details to go back to birth of parents.

* MPs declare they have never held dual citizenship or how they have taken steps to renounce it.

* "Attitude of other MPs" to determine who gets referred to High Court.

* Possible extra sitting day to deal with court referrals.

BILL SHORTEN (LABOR)

* December 1 deadline for paperwork.

* MPs must lodge a "statement of facts" on what steps were taken to investigate whether having a parent or grandparent born overseas entitled them to citizenship.

* No extra time for parliament to sit.

* Process from lodgment to referrals to be completed by end of year.

RICHARD DI NATALE (GREENS)

* Cross-party committee to receive paperwork from MPs.

* Committee works with citizenship experts to assess all paperwork.

* Committee makes recommendations to parliament on who has questions worthy of referral to High Court.

* Process to be completed by end of the year.
