Shane Warne has given former Test coach John Buchanan a stinging rebuke for suggesting Michael Clarke's Test captaincy eroded the 'Baggy Green' culture.

Earlier this week Buchanan criticised Clarke's tenure as skipper, accusing him of not buying into national team culture.

Former Test legend Warne said Buchanan was unqualified to speak on the matter given his lack of on-field experience.

"It's an absolute joke, really. Guys like John Buchanan trying to do cheap shots and say that he's let down the culture of the baggy green. Give us a break, mate. Are you for real?" Warne said on Channel Nine's Today Show.

"This bloke had no idea about the game of cricket.

"He never played the game, doesn't know what the players go through. And suddenly he's saying he wrecked the culture of the `baggy green'."
