Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson admits his side has some "things to work on" ahead of round one of the AFL season.

The Hawks were overrun by Carlton by five points in their final trial match in Launceston on Saturday night.

Remarkably, Hawthorn had 62 inside 50s to Carlton's 39 but were unable to convert.

"We controlled a lot of the indicators of the game we like, which is inside 50s and scoring opportunities," Clarkson said of the 16.6 (102) to 13.19 (97) loss.

"We've got some things to work on over the course of the next couple of weeks to get ourselves tuned up for the first game against Collingwood.

"By-and-large we just lacked polish in front of goal."

Hawthorn looked on top until halftime, with an eight-goal Carlton third term doing the damage.

Veteran Shaun Burgoyne was one of the more errant in front of goal, finishing with an uncharacteristic 0.5.

New recruit Jarman Impey was a bright spark with three goals from 18 possessions.

"He was impressive. He gave us that speed and electricity we've been looking for," Clarkson said.

The former Port Adelaide flyer may face some questions though over a heated confrontation with Jed Lamb during near the boundary line.

Impey appeared to throw his head forward towards the Carlton player as the pair got to their feet after a contest for possession.

Paul Puopolo copped a cork to the leg after two early goals but returned late in the match.
