Clarkson escapes penalty from verbal clash

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has escaped penalty for abusing players during a VFL clash.

AFL Victoria will take no action against Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson for abusing two Port Melbourne players during Saturday's VFL clash with the Box Hill Hawks.

The Hawks were asked to explain Clarkson's quarter-time verbal clash, with AFL Victoria announcing they were satisfied with the response and the coach's proactive approach.

Clarkson had already phoned the players, Toby Pinwill and John Baird, to apologise.

"Alastair acknowledged his actions were inappropriate, has expressed his regret at the situation and apologised to the VFL for the incident," AFL Victoria said in a statement.

Clarkson was reportedly upset by an off-the-ball incident involving Box Hill skipper Sam Iles and Pinwill.

Last year, Clarkson was banned by the South Metro Junior Football League for four matches after abusing an umpire's adviser during his son's under-9s match.

That happened a day after he punched a hole in the wall of the coaches' box at the MCG during a Hawthorn game.
