Classy Catania stun Lazio

Lazio travelled to Sicily on Sunday hoping to continue their unbeaten run under Edy Reja, who succeeded Vladimir Petkovic as coach.

Relegation-threatened Catania have hauled themselves a point clear of the Serie A drop zone thanks to a shock 3-1 win at home to Lazio.

Lazio travelled to Sicily on Sunday hoping to continue their unbeaten run under Edy Reja, who succeeded Vladimir Petkovic as coach when the Bosnian was sacked at the turn of the year.

But in splendid conditions the visitors were quickly under pressure after captain Mariano Izco sent a half-volley past Erit Berisha and inside the keeper's near post in the first minute of play.

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri, who last week returned from a six-month ban for his role in a match-fixing affair, headed home Abdoulay Konko's cross in first-half injury time to level.

However, Catania restored their one-goal advantage three minutes after the restart when Nicola Spolli met Francesco Lodi's cross with a superb diving header to give the hosts a 48th-minute lead.

Catania put the match virtually beyond reach with a third goal 10 minutes later, when Keko and Gino Peruzzi shared a one-two before the latter beat Berisha from close range.

The Sicilians' fourth win moved them off the foot of the table to one point clear of third-from-bottom Chievo, who are away to leaders Juventus later on Sunday.

Lazio's eighth defeat, their first since the 4-1 rout at Verona prior to the Christmas break which cost Petkovic his job, dropped the capital club one place to 10th with a seven-point gap to Inter Milan in the first Europa League qualifying spot.
