Climate authority reaffirms recommendation

The Climate Change Authority has reaffirmed its recommendation that Australia should commit to cutting emissions by 30 per cent on 2000 levels by 2025.

Australia has again been urged to commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent on 2000 levels over the decade.

The Climate Change Authority has reaffirmed its recommendation to the federal government after consulting with stakeholders, ahead of the Paris Conference in December.

The authority's final report on the country's future reduction target, released on Thursday, also reiterated the need to reduce 2000 levels by 40 to 60 per cent by 2030.

Discussions with stakeholders and new information which emerged in recent weeks had strengthened how appropriate were the preliminary recommendations, it said.

"The authority believes its recommendations constitute a credible package for the Australian government to take to the Paris Conference."

Targets which are consistent with the science and comparable with similar countries would send a signal the federal government was intent on playing a leadership role in a low-carbon world.

The recommendations have been provided to Environment Minister Greg Hunt.
