Hollywood star George Clooney has come under fire from London Mayor Boris Johnson after wading into the debate over the controversial Elgin Marbles.

The Hollywood actor spoke out about the Greek treasure collection, which was removed from Athens in the early 1800s and is now housed at the British Museum in London, while promoting his new movie The Monuments Men.

Clooney, who plays an art expert tracking down masterpieces stolen by the Nazis during World War II, urged U.K. leaders to end centuries of tensions between the two countries by handing the marble sculptures back to Greece.

However, his comments have drawn the wrath of London's leading politician, Johnson.

"Someone urgently needs to restore George Clooney's marbles," the mayor told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"Here he is plugging a film about looted Nazi art without realising that Goring (Nazi politician Hermann Goring) himself had plans to plunder the British Museum.

"And where were the Nazis going to send the Elgin marbles? To Athens!... He (Clooney) should stuff the Hollywood script and stick to history."
