Clowning around: Travelling cat circus has a serious message

It may look silly but one woman's travelling cat circus is actually helping to spread an important message.

If there's one woman who can claim the label 'cat lady,' it's Samantha Martin.

She's the creator of the Amazing Acro-Cats, an-all cat circus that travels around the US.

After adopting rescue and stray cats, she began teaching them tricks and realised their potential.

"It started out very simply with a couple of ladders and a big rope I got from the hardware store...and a half of the cats are mine, I count kitten as half a cat. They are all my cats," she said.

"Skateboarding cats, yes, bell-ringing cats...so you can train a cat to do just about anything."

She quit her job as a zookeeper and ran away to run the circus, full time.

"I started it about 10 years ago," she said.

"I'd be like, 'hey come check out these cats and what they're doing,' and people just started showing up in droves."

"The cats roll barrels, push shopping carts, jump through hoops, do long jumps, high jumps, ring bells and even play in an all cat band called The Rock Cats."

The antics might be silly but they're helping bring attention to the issue of foster cats.

Ms Martin said each show is a chance for a foster cat to find a home.

"Since 2009 I've found homes for 142 cats and kittens," she said.

"I have enough space in my life, my heart, and my bus to take a few here and there."
