The American doctor went Kathmandu as a journalist but found himself volunteering to help doctors because hospitals in Nepal are struggling to treat thousands of injured earthquake survivors.
It’s reported the neurosurgeon performed a craniotomy on the young girl, Selena Dohal, after a wall of her family's home fell on her as she collected water outside.
Dr Sanjay told CNN the girl, who lives in a more remote area of the country, only reached Kathmandu's Bir Hospital two days after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and by that point, blood had collected in the top of her brain.
“She is recovering well,” he told CNN.
While this is good news there are many others in need of similar medical attention and the hospitals are overwhelmed.
"I've seen a lot of situations around the world, and this is as bad as I've ever seen it," Gupta said.
It is not the first time Dr Sanjay Gupta has performed surgery while on duty as reporter.
It’s believed in 2003 while covering the war In Iraq he carried out emergency surgery on US soldiers and Iraqi civilians.
He also made use of his medical skills while reporting on the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
