Coaches back runners in AFL meeting

Essendon's John Worsfold says it looks as if the majority of AFL coaches want runners kept in the game.

Team runners might be safe in the AFL, despite the Nick Maxwell controversy sparking speculation about their future.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan hosted 10 senior coaches for their annual dinner on Wednesday and Essendon's John Worsfold said the runners received broad support.

"I think runners are safe but I don't know that most of the coaches who were there last night still saw value in having the runners," Worsfold said.

Earlier this month, the AFL gave GWS an official warning because of Maxwell's actions on the field.

The Giants were incensed with media commentary that Maxwell was effectively filling up space across the edge of the centre square at opposition kickouts.

Worsfold said there was discussion about a lot of game-related issues at the McLachlan dinner, but little consensus.

"Nah - Gill was in charge and he did a couple of straw polls," Worsfold said.

"I think he miscounted a couple of times, it might have gone the way he wanted.

"It was more about the discussion and what the issues are."

The out of bounds rule, score reviews and the proposed AFLX competition were among the topics.

"Every topic we talk about, is 'how does this make the game better?," Worsfold said

"That's what Gill and Simon (Lethlean) appreciate, it doesn't mean we all see eye-to-eye.

"Is it AFL footy? That's what we want to maintain.

"We don't want to morph into a different type of code."
