Coal and gas focus of Sydney climate protest

About 1000 protesters joined together in a central Sydney park, forming a human sign saying 'beyond coal and gas' to spell out their demand to state and federal governments.

Sydney climate protest

Hundreds of protesters have gathered in a central Sydney park Sunday Sept. 21st, 2014 to protest the state and federal government's resistance to renewable energy.

"Coal, don't dig it, leave it in the ground it's time to get with it," the crowd chanted.

Jean and Tom Hay were out in the Sunday afternoon sunshine at Glebes's Bicentennial Park campaigning for greater use of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind.

The job can be done with solar, Mrs Hay, 75, said.

She marched to protest the Vietnam war in 1969 with her firstborn in a backpack.

Sunday's demonstration was about family too.

"It's for our grandchildren we are really taking action," Mrs Hay said.

The Hays said they believe the government was hesitant to promote and encourage renewable energy projects as its members are in the pockets of the fossil fuel companies.

Similar protests were taking place across Australia.

Organiser Nell Schofield from the Land Water Future representative said NSW Premier Mike Baird needed to protect
communities, water and agricultural land from mining and gas developments.

"The fact that the last three NSW mining ministers have been investigated by ICAC has revealed the undue influence of the mining industry on our planning system," Ms Schofield said.
