Australia's International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates has been appointed chairman of the coordination commission for the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
The IOC said on Tuesday in a statement that Coates, 63, was appointed by new IOC president Thomas Bach to chair the 15-strong commission which will assist Japanese organisers.
Tokyo was elected 2020 hosts over Madrid and Istanbul by the IOC Session last month in Buenos Aires, where Germany's Bach succeeded Jacques Rogge of Belgium atop the IOC.
Coates, the Australian Olympic Committee president, joined the IOC in 2001.
He has been on the executive board since 2009 and was last month elected vice-president.
He is a member of the Rio 2016 coordination commission and was also on that commission for the London 2012 Games. Coates is also on the IOC juridical and TV rights and new media commissions.
