A Nationals MP has lashed out at speculation over the timing of leader Warren Truss's retirement, insisting it could be years away.

John Cobb has also cautioned colleagues to carefully choose their next leader, who would act as prime minister when required, amid expectations outspoken deputy Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce will take the job.

Whoever the party elects needs to be "sound enough, is smart enough, calm enough and measured enough to make the whole country comfortable in the knowledge that if there was an emergency they would handle it in a very proper way," he told the Australian Financial Review on Thursday.
