Sunnier skies are expected in Victoria by the weekend, but for now the cold snap drags on with renewed vigour from Tuesday evening.
Western Victoria will from Tuesday evening cop the brunt of a strong cold front, which will deliver snow to the Grampians and higher peaks in the west.
"That (cold front) will bring renewed shower activity and should bring low levels of snow for the western ranges, down to 500 metres, by Tuesday evening," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams told AAP.
Cold, dry air behind the front will cause widespread frost in the west.
Mr Williams said temperatures across Victoria had been generally 1C to 3C below average.
Melbourne on Monday had a top of 12.7C and is expecting 11C on Tuesday, compared with the long-term average of 13.5C for July.
"We're having a fairly long run of days that are a little bit below average," he said. "It's a lengthy spell.
"We have had quite a lot of mild winters in the past 15 years or so."
Five to 10cm of snow is expected at Victoria's alpine resorts this week, a delight for skiers.
A high pressure system should clear showers from most of the state by Saturday, although clearer skies are likely to bring frost.
