Collapsed site prompts resident evacuation

A collapsed excavation site in Brisbane's south has prompted the evacuation of 15 people, a cat and a bird after their neighbouring homes came under threat.

More than a dozen evacuees will be moved to long-term alternative accommodation after a collapsed excavation site in Brisbane's south continues to threaten their homes.

The eight Department of Housing units on Middle Street in Cleveland came under threat on Saturday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of 15 people, a cat and a bird.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service assisted with the evacuation but left the scene on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for Housing Minister Mick de Brenni says the residents will be moved to long-term alternative accommodation in the area while the builder works to secure the site.
