Colombia's Sanchez in danger: report

A Colombian radio station has reported that national team player Carlos Sanchez has received death threats after his red card in the World Cup defeat to Japan.

Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez has received death threats after being sent off in his country's World Cup loss to Japan, Blu Radio reported.

Police in the South American country are investigating and a group of cybercrime specialists have been called in to help find the individuals responsible, the report said.

According to Blu Radio, threats had been circulating on social media against the footballer.

Sanchez was shown the red card early on in the 2-1 defeat, which resulted in Japan's Shinji Kagawa converting from the spot in the sixth minute.

The Sanchez death threats are especially worrying considering the country's past with Andres Escobar. The defender scored an own goal in Colombia's 2-1 loss to the United States at the 1994 World Cup.

Colombia wound up being eliminated at the group stage and Escobar was shot dead five days after returning home from the finals.

More than 100,000 people attended Escobar's funeral and the perpetrator was sentenced a year later.
